Wyoming Seminary boys tennis ends season in PIAA team quarterfinals

Wyoming Seminary’s successful boys tennis season came to an end on Friday in Hershey.

The District 2 champion Blue Knights fell in the PIAA Class 2A Quarterfinals, bowing out against District 7 champ Indiana, 4-1, at Hershey Racquet Club.

Keefer Wu and Ferdi Leube earned the lone point for the Knights, defeating Philip Colen and Hammad Affan 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Sem’s first doubles team of Jake Showmaker and Wolfgang Fable nearly a pulled off a win, taking the first set against Sammy Szep and Cormac Pagnucci before falling 4-6, 7-6 (2), 10-3.

Indiana swept singles play, winning all three matches in straight sets. Zachary Palko defeated Will Ziegler at No. 1, 6-1, 6-3. Joey Bujdos beat Jerry Tang 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 and Evan Ray topped Rounak Lee 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. Indi

Coached by Allison Joanlanne, the Blue Knights went 11-0 in Wyoming Valley Conference play to earn the top seed in the district bracket. They defeated Dunmore, Holy Cross and then the league’s other top team, Dallas, to win the Class 2A title.

After that, they earned a win in the first round of the state tournament by knocking out District 4 champion Central Columbia.

Ziegler and Tang also teamed up at district doubles this week to win silver.

The duo that edged them for the crown, Dallas’ John Toussaint and Alex DeRome, advanced to the PIAA Class 2A doubles tournament. They will take on the District 7 championship tandem of Zach Alberts and John Watters at 10 a.m. Friday at Hershey Racquet Club.

The winners will play later that day at 3 p.m. in the quarterfinals, with the semifinals and championship rounds scheduled for next Saturday.
