DALLAS — Pennsylvania Game Commission Information and Education Supervisor William Williams will present “Flight to Oblivion, Extinction of the Passenger Pigeon,” on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Northeast Region Office in Dallas.
“The passenger pigeon was the most abundant bird in North America and several major nesting colonies were here in Northeastern Pennsylvania,” said Williams. “Their numbers went from billions to none in only a few decades. The last passenger pigeon in captivity, named Martha, died in the Cincinnati Zoo in September 1914, marking the end of a species.”
Flight to Oblivion explores the reasons for the bird’s demise and how its extinction prompted federal legislation and an international treaty that provide better protection to existing migratory bird species. Issues facing Pennsylvania’s current threatened and endangered birds and mammals also will be discussed.
Special note: A rare passenger pigeon mount on loan to the Game Commission’s Northeast Region Office will be on display during this special presentation!
“This informative and thought-provoking program will be of interest to bird enthusiasts, wildlife historians and anyone interested in conservation,” said Williams.
The Game Commission Northeast Region Office is located at 3917 Memorial Hwy., Dallas. The office phone number is 570-675-1143. No reservations are required.
