EXETER – Logan Paczewski is just about to start his sophomore year at Dallas.

Still, the talented golfer is already putting his name up with some of the best golfers the Wyoming Valley Conference has ever produced.

On Monday, the Mountaineer sank seven birdies and played bogey-free golf to shoot a tournament-record 64 and claim the Tom Tryba Tournament championship for the second straight year at Fox Hill Country Club.

He became the first player to repeat as champion since Holy Redeemer’s Mariano Medico did so in 2013 and is just the third player to win the event multiple times — joining Pittston Area great Brandon Matthews, who won it four times and is currently playing professionally on the Korn Ferry Tour.

The score of 64 by Paczewski shatters the previous record of 68 set by Medico in 2012.

“I was playing really good and a couple putts fell early,” Paczewski said. “It was very consistent ground. I want to thank Fox Hill for having us here. It’s in great shape and everything they do to get this tournament ready for a hundred and some kids is just awesome.”

As a freshman last year, Paczewski scored a 69 and won a playoff. But this year, despite a hot and humid day, he was spot on and mistake free. He hit all 18 greens, birdied holes No. 2, 4, 6, 7, 12, 14 and 16 and sank most birdie putts that were within six feet of the hole as he tied for the lowest round he ever shot during a 18-hole round, matching a result from his home course of Irem Golf Club. It was also the first bogey-free round that he’s ever had.

On Monday, he was also six strokes better than runner-up Bob Lugiano from Lake-Lehman.

“We played from a lot shorter today so I had a lot of flip wedges in, but I hit the ball a lot better. My proximity to the hole was a lot closer than it was the past year,” Paczewski said. “Last year, it was my first tournament for my high school team so I was kinda nervous. But now, it’s just relaxing and having fun.”

Paczewski’s 64 also helped the Mountaineers pick up the team title for the second straight year and for the third time in four years with a score of 300. Cooper Kelly followed Paczewski with a 76 to finish in fourth, while Brett Ostroski carded 79 and Matt Dolan and Freddie Lombardo finished with 81s.

“I think it’s exciting. It gives them the optimism that we all like to have,” Dallas coach Jane Kilduff said. “But I don’t think they’re walking away from this tournament without knowing there’s things they need to work on. So that really did help to declare specifics that they want to have in their practice round and game for a little more improvement. …They were pleased with their ball-striking, but they weren’t really pleased with their putting averages. So they want to work on their putting to help drop their scores a little bit lower.”

It wasn’t easy for the Mountaineers to repeat as champions, as Holy Redeemer gave them a scare. When scores were posted after the first nine holes, the Royals were right there — with the Mountaineers within striking distance. Martin Cryan, who was in the first group foursome with Lugiano, Paczewski and Wyoming Seminary’s Jeremy Callahan, shot 77 along with teammate Kip Miller to finish tied for fifth and pace the Royals, who scored 312. Sean Boland, who was tied for eighth, carded 78.

“There was a lot of good competition here,” Kilduff said. “At the turn there was some doubt because of the Holy Redeemer scores.”

The Wilkes-Barre Area Wolfpack made their regular season competition debut in any sport by finishing 12th out of 13 scoring teams and were led by Coughlin’s Evan Serafin, who carded 85.

Hanover Area’s Kyleen McCance finished in third place with a score of 73 and is believed to be the highest-finishing female in the 17-year history of the event.
