THROOP — Obviously, in a five-touchdown win, it’s difficult to pinpoint an exact turning point in a game. But, if there ever was one, it would be found in a goal line turnover that swung the momentum entirely.

It was business as usual for Lake-Lehman after a scoreless first quarter in a 35-0 victory over Mid Valley on Friday night.

A costly turnover and a string of penalties helped put the Spartans in prime position to take an early lead. With the ball at the Lehman 3-yard line, the Lehman linebackers broke through the gaps of a five-on-five line. Newcomer Jake Trumbower forced a fumble, and the Black Knights recovered for a key red zone turnover in the waning minutes of the first quarter.

“That was a big play in the game,” Lehman coach Gerry Gilsky said. “You never know, like if they score on that, it’s a turning point in the game. The score does not really reflect the quality of play that they had.”

Lehman quarterback Ethan Adams proved to have too many skilled weapons for the Mid Valley defense to cover. Adams found Danny Kutz for a 4-yard touchdown for the first points of the game with 11:25 left in the second quarter. Four minutes later, Adams sent a 25-yard pass to the end zone for receiver Casey Kaminski to catch on a forward dive.

Adams completed 12-of-17 passes for 144 yards.

The Black Knights let its running game and special teams play finish Adams’ work in the second half. Benefiting from advantageous field position, Ryan Eiden’s first run of the game for 18 yards set up a Zack Kojadinovich 2-yard touchdown to begin the half. Eiden maneuvered around the Spartans’ defenders for a 21-yard touchdown on the next Lehman possession to build a 28-0 lead.

After coughing up a fumble, Jeremy Scouton recovered from his gaff for a 1-yard touchdown to set off the running clock. Scouton went 36 yards on the previous play to set up the score.

Lehman forced its second turnover in the red zone to secure the shutout. Giovani Ferrari caught an interception at the 3-yard line with 1:46 left in the third quarter.
