Sophomore Donald Flynn continued his torrid pace over the last week, setting a new program-record with four goals Saturday, and the Wilkes University men’s ice hockey team showed no ill effects from Thanksgiving Dinner while defeating Suffolk University, 9-0 in the first round of the Steve Hoar Invitational hosted by Becker College.

The nine goals are the most scored in a single game while the nine-goal victory is the largest margin for victory for the young program.

The Colonels improved to 7-1 on the season and are on a seven-game win streak.

Flynn got Wilkes on the board with a four-on-four goal at 6:55 in the first with assists from Tyler Barrow and Michael Gurska.

Tyson Araujo doubled the lead with a power-play tally at 19:00 in the first with assists from Flynn and Barrow as the Colonels entered the first intermission with a 2-0 advantage.

Flynn got his second score at 8:20 in the second, assisted by Xavier Abdella and Dylan Kuipers.

Danny Reidel got in the goal column with an even-strength goal at 11:59 in the second with assists from Joey Pasquini and Paul Cimilluca giving Wilkes a comfortable 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Flynn started the scoring in the third at 9:15 with a power-play score with an assist from Nick Fea.

Ryan Galvin (11:24) assisted from Pasquini, Flynn (14:05) assisted by Reidel, Fea (PP, 17:26) assisted by Phil Erickson and Gurska, and Pasquini (19:20) assisted by Reidel finished the scoring for Wilkes.

Flynn finished a game-high plus-six. Fea and Araujo ended the game plus-four while six Colonels were plus-three.

Wilkes finished 63 percent (38-60) on faceoffs.

Michael Paterson-Jones stopped all 17 shots he faced to earn his first career shutout.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Misericordia 74, Wesley 62

Tony Harding led four players in double figures and Noah Rivera had a double-double as the Cougars pulled away at the Anderson Center.

Harding had 16 points and nine rebounds and Rivera added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Darius Jackson had 15 points and Joseph Baldachino added 12.

Harding was 6-6 from the free throw line to lead a 90% (18-20) team effort from the line.

Nate Kreitzer made two free throws to start an 8-0 run and put Misericordia in front for good, 58-56, with 5:48 to play.

Patrick Douthit followed with a pair of free throws and Baldachino’s driving scoop shot made it 62-56.

Douthit added a back-door layup with a nice pass from Harding to make it 64-56 with 2:33 remaining.

Harding and Baldachino combined for 10 free throws over the final 1:46 to secure the win.

Misericordia will travel to Neumann, Wednesday.
