DALLAS TWP. — Apparently, the Dallas Mountaineers don’t like losing very much.

So Deanna Wallace, Lauren Charlton and the rest of the Mountaineers felt it critical to get back on the winning track.

Using strong inside moves, Wallace proved a perfect complement to Charlton’s team-high 13 points Thursday and Dallas rebounded from a difficult loss by out-muscling Nanticoke Area, 62-40 in a girls basketball game at snowy Dallas High School.

“We just knew we had to clean it up,” said Wallace, who finished with 11 points. “I think we played a lot better this game.”

The loss stopped Nanticoke Area’s three-game winning streak and dropped the Trojanettes to 3-2 in the WVC Division 1, while Dallas moved to 5-1 and locked with Hazleton Area in a tie for the division lead.

The performance, which also included key five-point scoring sprees by Charlton, Haley Habrack and Julia Kocher, also helped sooth the bitterness of Monday’s 54-37 loss at Hazleton Area which cost the Mountaineers sole possession of first place.

“The Hazleton loss stung,” Dallas coach Kelly Johnson said. “We were mentally and physically tired, after the two-point game with Wilkes-Barre Area (won in the final 10 seconds Friday) and the overtime game (against Berwick) Saturday. Playing three big games in four days, I think we were mentally and physically exhausted.”

Not Thursday.

Both teams got off to a slow, clumsy start where turnovers outnumbered baskets. But with Nanticoke Area’s defense swarming around Dallas scoring leader Charlton, Wallace worked her way underneath and hit a couple of layups to give the Mountaineers an 8-4 lead after a quarter.

“I think it was the pressure, getting nervous with the ball,” Wallace said of Dallas’ early-game struggles. “Once we got used to all the hands everywhere and looked at how to pass over the press, we were fine. Coach just told me to keep going to the basket, keep going strong.”

While Nanticoke Area’s defense started strong against Charlton, holding her to three free throws nearly 10 minutes into the game, Wallace had a bucket to trigger an 8-2 run that began the second quarter and set up Dallas with a 10-point advantage.

The Trojanettes tried to rally back when Jen Kurkoski and Riley Baird hit consecutive 3-pointers to cut Dallas’ lead to four points, and Lauren Casey’s three-point play pulled Nanticoke Area within 21-17 with 2:39 remaining in the first half.

But Morgan MacNeely scored five points for Dallas in the second period and Charlton scored eight points in the last 6:11 of the quarter, including a 3-pointer followed by a layup in the final 39 seconds to give Dallas a 29-19 halftime lead.

“I think we have a lot of other people who can shoot and score a lot,” Wallace said. “When they double down on Lauren, it actually makes it easier and leaves other people open. I think it opened up a lot better this game.”

Wallace helped Dallas open a 21-point lead by the end of the third quarter by popping a 3-pointer and a regular basket.

“Deanna has a great handle on the ball,” Johnson said. “She’s pretty comfortable with her handle on the ball.”

Habrack scored five consecutive points in Dallas’ 20-9 third quarter that put victory away, and Kocher came off the bench with five points in the final quarter to close out the convincing win.

“That may have been, collectively, one of the best games we’ve played all season,” Johnson said. “It was a little sloppy at the start. Once we got comfortable, I thought we played extremely well. The kids got comfortable, they they found each other, they found the open player. They were patient on offense, and the defense fuels the offense. There was good balance.

“The chemistry was really on tonight.”
