LA PLUME — The Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited opened its second Teens Conservation Summer Camp, titled the Keystone College/Trout Unlimited Teens Conservation Camp.
In a collaborative effort, Keystone College’s Environmental Department and local Trout Unlimited Chapters in Northeastern Pennsylvania will host a fly fishing school on the college’s campus.
The one-week camp, from Sunday, June 14 to Saturday, June 20, will be open to teenagers ages 14 to 17, who can demonstrate a desire to promote a healthy environment while developing the skills needed to become an accomplished fly fisherman or woman. Some courses will cover college level materials involving the sciences of watershed biology, conservation, aquatic-life sciences, water resources and how they are affected by natural occurrences like hydro-geology and storm water run-off.
“They will also cover the fundamentals of fly fishing, such as casting, fly tying, fish habitat, hatches and styles and approaches to surface and subsurface fishing techniques,” founder and co-director of the camp, Charlie Charlesworth, local Trout Unlimited Chapter President, said in a press release.
According to Charlesworth, the camp will be limited to 20 students this year. He added the instructors will consist of volunteers from several universities, the County’s Conservation District, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and Trout Unlimited.
The cost of the camp is $275 per student and includes housing, meals, materials, study guides and the use of loaner equipment. Students are permitted to bring their own equipment but neither the college, camp, or Trout Unlimited will be responsible for that equipment. Students can apply to their local Trout Unlimited chapters for information on scholarships offered by local businesses.
Registration for all students will open on March 1. Students can request an application by contacting lackawannatu.trout@gmail.com or Trout Unlimited, 542 Boulevard Ave., Dickson City, PA 18519.
