Jack Masich and Ken Glenville won the Jack Yohey Better Ball Of Partners Invitational Tournament for the fifth time at the Berwick Golf Club in 1982.

Masich and Glenville set a tournament record with a three-round total of 193. They shot a 61 in their second round, also a tournament record. Masich was from Berwick. Glenville was from Monroe, Mich.

Charles Schugdinus and Tony Peck, from Emanon, shot a 201 for second place. They were ahead of the eventual winners after two rounds, but shot a 71 in the third round.

Adam Serafin and Jack Serafin were third with a 205.

1976

Luther Cease, of Lake Silkworth, recorded a hole-in-one on the 135-yard sixth hole at Lehman Golf Course. He was playing with Millard Galat and Jack Crossin.

Cease began golfing in 1961 and had a hole-in-one two years earlier at Lehman. He finished his round with a 5-over 73.

1978

Jack Kochanski threw a no-hitter as the Heights Cubs defeated the Miners Mills Angels 9-1 in Little League action.

Miners Mills scored its only run on a walk, stolen base and overthrow.

1980

Swoyersville lost for only the third time in 15 games as Jenkins Township won 4-3 in American Legion baseball. However, Swoyersville’s losses went deeper than just a game.

Right fielder Howie Holly broken his clavicle diving for a sinking flyball. Bob Scranage suffered a fractured wrist on a collision at home plate.

1991

Former Meyers and Notre Dame star Raghib Ismail was greeted with a chorus of boos by Ottawa fans when it was announced he wouldn’t play in the CFL opener. Instead, Ismail watched from the bench as Toronto defeated Ottawa 35-18 before 23,254 spectators.

Ismail was out with a pulled leg muscle and had gone to Los Angeles for treatment. While there, he appeared on the Arsenio Hall Show. He said he understood the fans’ frustration and was equally upset he couldn’t play.

1993

John Halbing, of Dallas, won his second King Of The Hill title as he won the Giants Despair Hillclimb in Laurel Run.

Halbing tackled the course in 43.919 seconds. Jerry Coffee, of Avoca, was second with a time of 43.971.

The annual event was postponed this year until Oct. 10-11.

2010

Mountain Top banged out six home runs to defeat Nanticoke 10-4 and set up a decisive game for the District 16 Little League Major Baseball championship.

Matt Dacey homered twice while Jay Popson, Mike Vital, Marcus Joseph and Matt Darden had one home run each.

2011

Wyoming Seminary suspended its football program, citing a lack of interest among its student-athletes.

Seminary finished 3-6 in 2010. There were 32 players on the roster, but 18 were either seniors or post-graduates.

The team was scheduled to play its season opener Sept. 3. The program played its first game in 1884.
