The Hazleton Area field hockey team split a pair of matches over the weekend, knocking off Nanticoke Area 1-0 on Friday before falling to Wyoming Area on Saturday by a 3-1 score.

In Friday’s contest, Haylee Petroski scored the lone goal off an assist from Gabrielle Cavenas in the third quarter. Elaina Ashman made four saves for the Cougars, while Alexus Nichols also stopped four shots in net for Nanticoke.

On Saturday, Wyoming Area went up 1-0 in the first quarter with a goal from Kayla Kiwak. Hazleton would tie it up in the third quarter with a Petroski goal, but two scores from Nina Angeli in the final quarter gave the Warriors the victory. Angeli’s goals were assisted by Alexys Moore and Kiwak.

GIRLS SOCCER

Berwick 4, Lake-Lehman 1

Berwick scored all four of their goals in the second half en route to the victory over Lake-Lehman.

Katie Starr scored a pair for the Bulldogs, with Morgan Lisnock and Sarina Definnis each adding a score of their own. Starr’s first goal was assisted by Rachel Whitenight, while Gwyn Noroski and Kayla Fernandez were both credited with an assist on Lisnock’s goal.

Hailey Kline scored the lone goal for Lake-Lehman on a free kick late in the second half.

Wilkes-Barre Area 5, Wyoming Area 3

Krystal Haertler scored four goals in the first half to pace the Wolfpack on Saturday.

Esabella Mendola added Wilkes-Barre’s fifth goal in the second half, assisted by Haley Kransavage. Bonita Brigido added a pair of assists, and Jyanna Mendola had an assist of her own.

The Warriors were led by Christina Kosco, who had a pair of goals. Olivia Allen added the team’s other score. Halle Kranson added an assist.

The combination of Olivia Allen and Sydney Kruszka saved nine shots for the Warriors, while Rylee O’Donnell made seven saves for Wilkes-Barre.

Wyoming Area 1, Wilkes-Barre Area 0

Liam Burke’s goal, assisted by Kendall Heck, was enough for the Warriors to hang on for the win over Wilkes-Barre Area.

Adam Wisnewski made five saves for Wyoming Area, while Nick Wartella made four saves for the Wolfpack.

GIRLS TENNIS

Hazleton Area 5, Tamaqua 0

The Cougars knocked off Tamaqua with a clean sweep on Saturday morning.

Alyssa Mazurek, Maddie Terracino and Sydney Shoemaker notched singles victories for Hazleton, all in straight sets.

Wins in doubles competition came from the teams of Jasmine VanCamp/Anjolina Hsiao, and Emily Prokapovich/Jenna Harmanosky.
