High school sports finally returned to the area on Friday and the Lake-Lehman girls basketball team opened in style, defeating Hazleton Area 65-32 in a rematch of last season’s Wyoming Valley Conference championship game, which was won by the Black Knights.

Lake-Lehman jumped all over the Cougars on Friday, outscoring them 21-6 in the first quarter and 41-19 in the first half.

Claire Dougherty led the way for the Black Knights, posting 27 points while going 11-for-14 from the field and 3-for-3 from downtown in an impressive season debut. Chase Purdy and Hailey Kline both posted double-doubles with 13 points and 12 rebounds for Purdy and 13 points and 15 rebounds for Kline.

The Cougars were led by Brooke Boretski’s 10 points.

Berwick 55, Nanticoke Area 38

The Bulldogs scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to put away the Trojans in the season opener. Renny Murphy led the way with 17 points and Katie Starr had 11 points.

The Trojans scored 26 points in the third quarter to get back into the game despite a slow start that led to just 11 first half points. Riley Baird scored a team-high 15 points and Lauren Casey scored eight points.
