Scranton Prep’s Thor Balavage finished in third place in the 220-pound weight class at the Northeast Class AA Regional Wrestling Tournament at Bethlehem Liberty High School Feb. 27-28 to qualify for the PIAA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association) Championships in Hershey March 5-7.
Balavage picked up a 3-1 sudden victory over Mount Carmel’s Wesley Shurock in the first round before dropping a 2-1 decision to Montoursville’s Ben Cerney.
The junior rebounded once in the consolation bracket by defeating Roger Horton, of Athens, by decision 3-2 and Western Wayne’s Cole Fuller by pin fall in 3:44.
Balavage (39-2) will face Kittanning junior Jacob Robb (37-4) in the first round of the state tournament.
Scranton Prep finished with 12 team points to place 24th out of 37 teams.
Lackawanna Trail didn’t register a point and finished in a tie for 33rd place. Sophomore Tyler Baltrusaitis lost a 15-3 major decision to Wyalusing’s Creighton Edsell and dropped a 14-1 major decision to Valley View’s Zack Meckes in the 132-pound weight class.
Junior Rocco Pacini was pinned by Wyalusing’s Justin Haley in 1:06 in the opening round and Western Wayne’s Josh Brown in 2:32 in the first round of consolations in the 160-pound weight class.
Abington Heights finished with six team points to place 36th out of 42 teams in the Northeast AAA Regional Tournament at Williamsport High School Feb. 27-28.
Senior James Fayocavitz dropped a 9-8 decision to Nazareth’s Travis Smith in the opening round match. In the consolation bracket, Fayocavitz pinned Frankin Towne Charter’s Greg Nau in 1:18 before falling to Father Judge’s Trevor Elfvin by decision, 4-3, in the 126-pound weight class.
Junior Nick Carr dropped a 7-5 decision to Nazareth’s Ricky Fornaciari in an opening round match in the 152-pound weight class. Carr defeated Coughlin’s Jake Cole by decision, 5-4, in the consolation bracket before falling to Bangor’s Charles Sell by major decision, 9-0.
Senior Anthony Sylvester was pinned by Mariana Bracetti Academy’s Julius Santos in 5:47 in an opening round match of the 195-pound weight class. Sylvester defeated Central High’s Olajide Soyinks by decision, 9-4, in the first round of consolations before losing to Trent Thomas, of Pleasant Valley by decision, 10-5.
