CLINTON TWP. — Northwest had no trouble getting shots in Thursday night’s District 2 Class 2A girls basketball quarterfinal at Lackawanna Trail.

Making shots in the first three quarters was an entirely different matter.

“We couldn’t make them,” Northwest coach Scott Miner said after the 47-25 loss. “It was one of those days. We got some good looks early and we just didn’t shoot it well.”

Northwest got off more than twice as many shots as Lackawanna Trail in the first three quarters, but still trailed 20-12.

The Lady Lions then blew the game open with a 27-point fourth quarter.

The Rangers got the extra attempts as the result of forcing 20 turnovers in the first half and grabbing 16 offensive rebounds through three quarters.

Despite some close-range shots off steals and rebounds and some open looks from 3-point range, where the Northwest offense is often based, the offense sputtered.

Northwest scored one point in the first 7:04 of the second quarter and just two points in the first 9:30 of the second half.

The Rangers missed all 13 of their 3-point attempts, including 11 in the first three quarters. During that time, they were 5-for-39 (12.8 percent) from the floor and 2-for-8 (25.0 percent from the line).

Freshman Gretchen Rejrat helped fourth-seeded Lackawanna Trail pull away from fifth-seeded Northwest. She had nine of her 11 points, all seven of her rebounds, four of her five assists, two of her three steals and one of her two blocked shots in the last eight minutes.

Mackenzie Schirg, another freshman reserve, had eight of her 10 points in the fourth.

Morgan Hermanofski led Northwest’s defensive pressure and finished with six points and six steals. Charleigh Miner also had six steals.
