WILKES-BARRE TWP. — Meyers didn’t waste any time Saturday night, blocking two punts in the first quarter and scoring four times to jump on Holy Redeemer in a 48-13 victory in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2A game played at King’s College.

Meyers improved to 6-3 as it heads into Friday’s regular-season finale with city rival GAR (6-3). The winner will likely make the postseason in either the District 2 Class 2A or Eastern Conference Class 2A playoffs.

“It’s a rivalry game. Same record, fighting for a playoff spot,” Meyers coach Jeff Labatch said. “The winner is in somewhere I’m pretty sure.”

Redeemer fell to 1-8. It was a tough week of practice for the Royals after the death of a classmate earlier in the week.

“It was a combination of things,” Redeemer coach Scott Dennis said. “It’s been a tough week for our boys. Emotionally, it was tough for them. I think they found themselves several times in this game on a high and then a low. Then a high and then a low. It’s just been a challenging week for the Redeemer family.”

Meyers got its first touchdown on a 2-yard run by running back Jason Marston after blocking a Redeemer punt. Then on Redeemer’s next possession, Meyers’ Raheem Twyman intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown.

The Mohawks followed with another blocked punt. Running back Mark Robinson carried the ball on three straight plays, finishing off the short drive with an 8-yard touchdown run.

For Robinson, one of the fastest players in the WVC, it was his first action since Week 3 when he injured his elbow late in the second quarter against Riverside.

“He’s healthy now,” Labatch said. “He got cleared on Tuesday. He practiced all week, got in shape. We didn’t want to use him too much if we didn’t need to. If we needed to, we would have put him in both ways. But we’re just trying to ease him in to get him ready for next week.”

Robinson wasn’t needed after his touchdown as Meyers scored on its next two possessions on a 19-yard run by quarterback Willie Wallace and a 1-yard run by Marston to take a 34-0 lead at halftime.
