WILKES-BARRE — Little by little, the Holy Redeemer softball team kept building its lead Monday afternoon.

Two runs here. Then a run here and another and another and another. All building up to the offensive outburst that has been Redeemer’s trademark in recent years.

The outburst came in the sixth as the Royals scored five times to finish off Wyoming Seminary 10-0 in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 game ended due to the 10-run rule.

Sophomore Tiana Wren led the way for the two-time state champions, knocking in four runs including a solo homer to dead center. Redeemer, though, did its major damage in the sixth as Morgan Bienkowski’s double was followed by consecutive triples to right by Allyson Laiuvara and Brittany Hebda.

Hebda scored the 10th run, and ended the game, on a passed ball.

Redeemer (3-0) has now outscored its three divisional opponents 37-0. The victory was the Royals’ 51st consecutive WVC regular-season win. They haven’t lost a WVC game since 2014.

“They’re a softball factory,” Seminary coach Steve Mytych said. “They’ll get girls who will come to their school who are super good. That’s how good programs work. I don’t think we’ll play them in districts, so that’s a positive, but I’m actually happy we have them on our schedule.”

Seminary (1-1) was hoping to make some inroads against the Royals after coming off its first winning season since 2007. The Blue Knights, though, managed one hit — a lined single to right by Melinda Holena to start the fourth inning. She was erased on a fielder’s choice as Seminary couldn’t get a runner to second against Redeemer’s pitching duo of starter Kristen Coffay and reliever Morgan Bienkowski.

Redeemer had some moderate trouble against Seminary freshman pitcher Delaney Romanchick, who was in the Redeemer feeder school system last year. Wren’s two-run single in the first was a blooper just inside the left-field line and just out of reach of Sem left fielder Lauren Fletcher.

The Royals, though, put things together offensively in the sixth as Samantha Rajza’s single was followed by a double from Bienkowski and consecutive triples from Laiuvara and Hebda.

“They never faced (Romanchick) so they had to face her a couple times,” Redeemer coach Jerry Paulukonis said. “Once they saw the pitches here and there, they kind of got a key on it and wait for that one to drive.”
