EMMANUEL EDOUKOU
School: GAR
Year: Senior
Sport, position: Track & Field, 100m, 200m, 4X100 relay
Family: Marie Attiah, mother
Last week: Seeded ninth in the 100-meter dash, Edoukou shocked the field by walking away with a gold medal in 11.44 seconds. He also ran the third leg for the Grenadiers’ 400 relay team that took home district gold.
What he says: “I was really expecting that (100 meter) performance from myself. It was pretty great feeling to come out on top in the end. … I knew I was in the lead for a little bit and in the end … I don’t really remember much about the race, I just remember finishing.
Coach says: “It was really something. Coming in (seeded) ninth, he overcame a lot of adversity. He had a strong will to win this. It was finally his turn. He’s been running indoors for the last two years. Of anyone I know, he deserves it.” — Stanley Mirin, GAR head track and field coach
