WILKES-BARRE — It wasn’t for District 2 supremacy this time, or even a battle for better playoff seeding.
But the early-season girls basketball showdown between Dunmore and Holy Redeemer could go a long way in determining the fate for both at the end of the season.
And despite suffering its first defeat, Redeemer likes where it stands right now.
“It’s a learning experience at this point,” Holy Redeemer coach John Jezorwski said. “Where we are in the season, we’re right where we need to be.
“I’m proud of the girls.”
Redeemer was right there at the end Monday, until Lisa Tallo took over to score seven of her 15 points in the final three minutes to lead Dunmore to a 59-53 victory over the Royals in a rematch of last year’s District 2 Class 3A title game.
Call it the revenge of the Bucks, who had their perfect season spoiled by Redeemer in the 2016-17 district championship.
The fast finish dropped Redeemer to 2-1 and boosted Dunmore to 4-0 in the District 2 Class 3A standings, with a long way to go.
And Tallo had a ton to do with it.
She answered Redeemer’s 10-2 surge to open the second half with consecutive 3-point field goals to tie the game at 35-35 midway through the third quarter, then dropped a bucket just under a minute later to keep the Bucks within two points.
“Once we got up, we put it on cruise control a little bit,” Jezorwski said.
Meanwhile, Tallo had the Bucks motoring.
She tied the game at 51-51 by hitting a basket with 2:17 to play, and after her teammate Victoria Toomey scored the last of her 17 points to break the tie, Tallo iced the game by sinking five of six foul shots in the final 29 seconds to ice victory for the Bucks.
“I think we had a gritty effort,” Jezorwski said. “We just lost focus in the fourth quarter.”
Before Dumore’s dynamic ending, the Royals seemed pretty locked in.
Guard Julia Andrejko scored a game-high 22 points, while Sam Yencha and Cameron Marcinkowski combined for 23 more as Redeemer alternated between taking control and various points and trying to stay in the game at others.
Yencha scored nine of her 13 points in the first half, as Redeemer rallied from an early four-point deficit into a 25-25 tie at halftime.
Andrejko and Marcinkowski, who finished with 10 points, both dropped a 3-pointer and regular bucket to charge a 10-2 run at the start of the third quarter that had the Royals rollicking with a 35-27 advantage.
But behind Tallo’s shooting, Dunmore roared back, and into a 38-37 lead with a quarter to play.
Kelly Quinn, who led Dunmore with 21 points, knocked down three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to give Dunmore a 49-27 lead.
Then Andrejko swished two foul shots and Marcinkowski’s 16-foot corner jumper put Redeemer up by a bucket, setting up Tallo’s late-game flurry.
“I was pleased with the defensive effort,” Jezorwski said. “We made some shots. Julia’s one who has really stepped up to help us, as has Sarah Kuderka.”
The Royals opened the season missing ailing seniors Sam Rajza and Irelyn Jannuzzi, who both started for last year’s District 2 title team that played in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals. And while they don’t expect to get Jannuzzi back, Razja is expected to play in Saturday’s game against Scranton Prep after suffering a torn ACL during the summer.
“She already got clearance, she’s been working out,” Jezorwski said. “She really worked hard to get back.”
Crestwood 60, Riverside 42
Sara Hopkins scored 18 points, including six in the first quarter that helped the Comets bolt to a 13-point lead in the victory.
Julia Makowski and Helena Jardine both scored 12 points for Crestwood, while Sarah Richards finished with 10.
Dallas 58, Susquehanna 24
Gianna Centrella led everyone with 14 points and the Mountaineers held Susquehanna to eight points in the first half while building an 18-point lead by intermission.
Lauren Charlton and Samantha Kern combined for 15 points in the victory.
Scranton Prep 50,
Valley West 41
Grace Giza scored 14 points in defeat, but Prep took a five-point halftime lead and built on it with a 15-8 third quarter.
Toni Amato added 11 points for Valley West.
Cecelia Collins led the Classics with 14 points, while Rachel Rose chipped in with 12 in the victory.
Wyoming Area 42,
Western Wayne 35
Addison Orzel scored six of her game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter as the Warriors pulled away from Western Wayne.
Sarah Holweg added 11 points in the victory.
Northwest 59, Coughlin 32
Brenna Babcock scored 18 points and the Rangers built a 39-16 halftime lead to end the suspense early.
Trista Babcock added 14 points in the win and Reagan Harrison tossed in 12.
Kira Meager led Coughlin with 10 points.
Mid Valley 45, Meyers 33
Bella Skaff led the Mohawks with 11 points in defeat.
Emily Morano led Mid Valley with a game-high 15 points, and Lauren Owens scored nine of her 14 points in the final period to take the Mohawks out of the game.
Delaware Valley 54, GAR 20
The Grenadiers fell behind 23-8 in the first half in the defeat.
Khira Cook scored all of her team-high seven points in the second half for the Grenadiers.
Marian Catholic 41,
Wyoming Seminary 23
The Colts outscored Sem 22-11 in the first half, then held on for victory.
Julia Gabriel led the Blue Knights with nine points in defeat.
