Local sports: Doug Genetti pilots MMI Prep’s 3-2 boys tennis win

FREELAND – MMI Prep swept the singles matches en route to a 3-2 victory over Pittston Area Friday in Wyoming Valley Conference boys tennis action.

Doug Genetti decided the match for the Preppers with a comeback 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.

Jonathan Smith cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win in the top flight. Evan Spear posted a win in the No. 2 singles.

The Patriots received two-set doubles wins from the duos of Mike Mazurkivich and Delmar Guziewicz, and John Romanoski and Juan Martinez.

Dallas 5, Coughlin 0

The Mountaineers’ Frank Bevevino earned a No. 1 singles victory by a 6-0, 7-6 score. At No. 2 singles, Anthony Deluca eked out a tough 7-5 first set win before shutting out his opponent in the second.

Jack Robbins and Cameron Tuck posted a 6-3, 7-6 triumph in the first singles for Dallas.

Crestwood 4, Berwick 1

Rob Shovlin came back from a set down to win for Crestwood in a third-set tiebreaker. Shovlin escaped from the No. 2 singles match with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7) victory.

Blake Whitmire was the lone Bulldogs’ victor with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.

Hazleton Area 5, Wyoming Area 0

The Hazleton Area duo of Drew Gemmell and Josh Provost took the No. 1 doubles match in straight sets in the Cougars’ sweep of Wyoming Area.

Wister Yuhas won No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0.

H.S. BOYS LACROSSE

Delaware Valley 14, Dallas 4

The Warriors enjoyed an eight-point effort from Nick Pampalone with six goals and an assist. Tim Cohen and Anton Mackey each tallied two goals and an assist.

Dallas’ Corey Metz garnered a hat trick with an assist. Connor Motley tacked on a goal. Corey McAndrew stopped 16 shots.

H.S. GIRLS LACROSSE

Wyoming Seminary 14, Wyoming Area 3

Eight players scored for the Blue Knights, highlighted by Kate Romanowski’s three goals and an assist. Abby Straub had three goals, and Gabby Grossman matched her with three points on two goals and an assist.

Mia Raineri made seven saves and Megan Fehling stopped two for Wyoming Seminary. Their counterpart Jessica Walkowia turned away six Blue Knights shots.

Jordan Kelly, Caitlin Butchko and Lindsey Poziac netted a goal for Wyoming Area.

H.S. BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Wyoming Valley West 3, Hazleton Area 0

The Spartans prevailed by 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 scores.

Nick Klimchok aided Wyoming Valley West with four aces, three kills and 29 assists. Adam McCue generated six kills and nine digs. Donovan Gaffney had five kills, three blocks and two assists.

Hazleton Area’s Jake Sasches chipped in with seven kills, two blocks and four digs. Tomas Doviak supported the Cougars on both sides of the court with 11 digs, 14 assists and two kills.

BASEBALL

Misericordia 16, King’s 4

Misericordia’s D.J. Navoczynski hit a seventh inning grand slam as part of a two-hit, five RBI afternoon. The Cougars received four hits, two RBI and two runs scored from Jeremy DeCotiis.

Cougar ace Ryan Dorosh allowed three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in five innings.

King’s equaled the modern era single season home run record when Coughlin grad Kyle Lupas hit the Monarchs’ 19th home run of the year.

TRACK & FIELD

Wigg hurls third

Sarah Wigg finished third in the discus with a 115-3 throw to lead the Misericordia on the opening day of the Widener Invitational. Nicole Schwartz trailed in sixth with a toss of 113 feet, 5 inches.

Bethany Killmon finished ninth in the 5K.

At Princeton, Hanover Area grad Amy Viti set a school record of 2:10.03 in the 800 m to earn 25th place.
