Local roundup: Pittston Area ends Dallas’ 20-game baseball winning streak

Times Leader

Nearly one year ago to the day, Dallas baseball’s history-making streak began with a win over Pittston Area. On Friday, the Patriots managed to put an end to it.

Pittston Area stormed out to a big early lead and Cole Cherkas made it stand up, going the distance in a 10-2 victory over the Mountaineers, snapping their run of 20 straight wins.

Starting with a 4-3 victory over the Patriots last May 2, the Mounts ripped off 13 straight wins en route to the Class 4A state championship. Dallas then won its first seven WVC games in 2018 to storm out to the lead in Division 2. The Mounts did lose a preseason game to Hanover Area in March, though the loss does not count toward the standings for a league title or the District 2 playoffs.

On Friday, Joe Stella went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Patriots. Hunter Ralston (two RBI) and Kyle Ralston had two hits apiece while Cherkas helped his cause by driving in two runs.

Mike Collins doubled and scored for Dallas.
