Tunkhannock grad Mike Papi saw extended playing time for Triple-A Columbus this past week.

Primarily a bench player this season, the Cleveland Indians outfielder played in five games and collected a .313 batting average with a double, two home runs, five walks, four runs scored and five RBI.

Papi raised his season-long batting average from .241 to .267.

Matt Wotherspoon

The Crestwood grad didn’t allow a hit in either of his relief appearances this week.

Pitching for Triple-A Norfolk, Wotherspoon hurled 1.1 innings of shutout baseball while striking out a batter. He pitched a perfect eighth inning in Thursday’s extra-inning win over Louisville.

Sal Biasi

The Hazleton Area and Penn State alum pitched three innings of shutout baseball on Wednesday for Single-A Lexington.

In his lone appearance of the week, Biasi struck out five batters and walked just one without giving up any hits. He was able to lower his ERA from 9.72 to 7.15.

Notable

Hazleton Area grad Tony Hernandez and former Hazleton Area student Jhordany Mezquita are still in extended spring training with their respective organizations. Hernandez pitches for the New York Yankees, while Mezquita is a Philadelphia Phillies prospect.
