Nick Singleton has earned most every freshman honor he was up for these past two weeks. Wednesday was no different when The Associated Press announced its All-Big Ten honors.

The Penn State running back was named Big Ten newcomer of the year by the AP after setting a school record with 10 rushing touchdowns. Heading into next month’s Rose Bowl, Singleton has 941 yards on the ground with a 6.32-yard average that led all freshmen nationally.

Next season Singleton will be looking to match teammate Joey Porter Jr. The cornerback was the lone Nittany Lions player to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors this season.

The AP placed Porter on the first team and gave second-team nods to fellow corner Kalen King, defensive tackle PJ Mustipher and offensive tackle Olu Fashanu.

Elsewhere Wednesday, Pro Football Focus named King to its All-Big Ten team and made him a third-team All-American. Singleton and linebacker Abdul Carter made PFF’s All-True Freshman team.

TOWNLEY TO TRANSFER

Redshirt freshman defensive end Davon Townley Jr. announced Wednesday that he is entering the transfer portal.

A 6-foot-6, 267-pounder out of Minneapolis, Townley saw his first college action this season, appearing in five games as a deep reserve. Townley made his first career tackle in a win over home state Minnesota.

“In my time here, I have learned many leesons and I’ve grown, not only as a player but as a man,” Townley wrote on social media, thanking head coach James Franklin, defensive line coach John Scott Jr. and his teammates “for bringing out the best in me and holding me to a high standard.

“After much prayer and consideration, as well as many conversations with my family, I would like to announce that I will be entering the transfer portal.”

Townley was the final addition to the Lions’ 2021 recruiting class, signing that February. He picked the Lions despite never stepping foot on campus because of NCAA restrictions caused by the pandemic.

He becomes the fifth Penn State player to enter his name in the portal since the transfer window opened on Monday. All five players — Townley, QB Christian Veilleux, DB Jeffrey Davis, DL Rodney McGraw and OL Maleek McNeil — were with the program for one or two years.

AP ALL BIG-TEN

(AP) — Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud is The Associated Press Big Ten offensive player of the year, Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell is defensive player of the year and Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh is coach of the year.

Stroud and Campbell are among five unanimous picks to the All-Big Ten first team in voting by 22 media members who cover the conference. The other unanimous choices are Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., Northwestern offensive tackle Peter Skoronski and Wisconsin linebacker Nick Herbig.

The first team includes six players from conference champion Michigan and five from Ohio State.

Stroud, Skoronski and Michigan kicker Jake Moody are repeat first-team selections.

Stroud was the AP Big Ten co-offensive player of the year in 2021, sharing the award with Michigan State’s Kenneth Walker III. Stroud also is a Heisman Trophy finalist for the second straight year.
