Mike Ford, a non-drafted free agent out of Princeton, is in his first full season with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Ford is off to a hot start, sporting a .258 batting average paired with two home runs, two doubles, three walks and 2 RBI heading into Saturday night’s game against the Charlotte Knights.

Here are four things you might not know about the RailRiders first baseman:

1. I’m a grill master. I love grilling. It’s probably my favorite type of cooking to do. Definitely steak, but I’ll do it all. Chicken — bone-in, boneless. Anything.

2. I fish a lot with my family. We have two boats down at the beach. We go anything from flier fishing to tuna fishing. One of my favorite pastimes. I like tuna fishing the most. Tuna, shark — anything big. We’ll go out to the Hudson or the Atlantic Princess, it’s called. It’s a big bluefin spot.

3. I got engaged in the offseason. I have a beautiful fiance who’s great for me. Her name is Stella. I proposed to her on the beach. My parents flew down and I kind of surprised her with my family there and her family there for dinner.

4. I’m going to get a golden retriever in the future. That’s the plan. We were going to get one (this week), but my apartment up here doesn’t allow dogs so we’re waiting until after the year. A golden retriever’s next. I’ve had a bunch of different breeds of dogs, but it’s just mid-sized. I like a little bigger dog, but they’re awesome.
