Philip Graham, the former publisher of the Washington Post, would often say that newspapers are “the first rough draft of history.” In Wilkes-Barre, the Times Leader has performed that role for 115 years.
During the past two decades, an astonishing number of American towns have lost their local newspapers. Too many places are now “news deserts,” without any reliable professional journalism to inform the public, shine a light on issues, and bind a community together.
However, that isn’t the case in Wilkes-Barre and the Wyoming Valley — and our community is better for it.
As a result, it’s wonderful to be able to wish the Times Leader a happy 115th birthday. I want to thank its employees for their service to our community through dedicated local journalism — keep up the good work!

Some of the key components of a community newspaper is to:
√ Promote local events and businesses, fostering a sense of community spirit and helping to support the local economy.
√ Keep residents informed about important local issues and provide a forum for discussion and public engagement.
√ Offer an opportunity for local businesses to advertise and reach their target audience.
√ Provide a voice for many different groups while promoting diversity and inclusiveness within the community.
√ Preserve the community’s cultural identity and history by highlighting its people, places, and events.
The Times Leader checks all of these boxes. We are fortunate to have this asset in our community and best wishes for another 115 years!
