Sarah Jessica Parker is poised to return to series TV after a long absence.
That’s the good news.
There’s more good news: The series is on HBO, home of her long-running hit “Sex and the City.”
The bad news? This means that our beloved SJP, who will always be known as Carrie Bradshaw, probably has pulled the plug on the long-rumored third film to that series.
Parker had said in prior interviews that she felt there was more to tell of the story of friends Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda.
But the actress just won’t have time. Not only will she star in the half-hour comedy “Divorce,” but Parker will also executive produce the show.
“Divorce” centers on a middle-aged woman (Parker), who, influenced by her two recently single friends, impulsively brings up the idea of divorce with her husband but then can’t decide whether to actually go through with it — until her husband discovers the affair she’s been having and wants to end the marriage. But it ends up being a very, very long divorce. It could almost be a subplot for a “Sex and the City” episode.
This marks the first time Parker will be back on the small screen in a regular role in 10 years. The last time she was on TV was in a recent arc on Fox’s glee.
She has been actively pursued by broadcast and cable networks.
There were rumors a while back about another show the actress was interested in. She had reportedly signed on to play a female reporter in the pilot based off the book “Busted: A Tale of Corruption and Betrayal In the City of Brotherly Love.” The show is coming from the same group behind “True Detective” and follows the real-life story of two female reporters who uncover corruption within the Philadelphia Police Department in 2009. She had been set to play one of the leads in the series’ limited run.
There is no word yet on whether “Busted” will still go into production without Parker.
As a producer, she executive produced the 2009 HBO pilot “Washingtonienne.” Parker will next be seen in the film “All Roads Lead To Rome.”
“Divorce” is being written by British writer-actress Sharon Horgan. It is expected to be filmed in New York where Parker lives and “Sex And The City” was based. Paul Simms, who has been helping another female actress-creator, Lena Dunham, on her New York-based HBO comedy “Girls,” has been tapped to assist Horgan as executive producer/co-showrunner. Horgan will executive produce through her Meriman Films, along with long-time collaborator Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment. Parker and Alison Benson will executive produce through Parker’s Pretty Matches Prods.
“Sex and the City” spawned two film sequels. The first in 2008 was “Sex and the City: The Movie,” which played to fairly decent reviews and saw Carrie tie the knot (finally!) with Mr. Big.
The second film didn’t fare that well. “Sex and the City 2,” which hit theaters in 2010, had the girls wrestling with the pressures of life, love, and work in Manhattan. But then it went way over the top. Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte joined Samantha for a trip to Abu Dhabi, where Samantha’s ex was filming a new movie.
That’s where the film made its big mistake.
Don’t they know that New York City is another “girl” when it comes to “Sex and the City”? Stay in NYC, the heart and soul of the show.
That’s why I was eager to see the fabulous four team up again on the big screen to give fans retribution to the dreadful second movie. Parker seemed eager, too. But not Chris Noth.
Maybe someday.
In the meantime Parker is poised for a comeback.
I just can’t wait to see her wardrobe in her latest return to TV. There better be high heels involved. And, perhaps, a tutu.
