Chamki, Abby and Zoe have fun with Big Bird in ‘Sesame Street Live! Make a New Friend.’

The cast of ‘Sesame Street Live! Make a New Friend’ performs a musical number.

WILKES-BARRE — Cookie Monster, Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird, Grover and others will visit the area and are hoping to make some new friends this weekend.

“Sesame Street Live! Make a New Friend” is coming to the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Township. Many may think of a cute, cuddly, blue character who loves devouring cookies, but Cookie Monster is really a trained dancer underneath that furry facade.

Danny Dwaine Wells makes his stage debut as that lovable character from “Sesame Street.”

“Getting the chance to share my passion with so many people is amazing,” he said. “I truly enjoy looking out into that audience and seeing the smiles.”

Wells brings Cookie Monster and his friends Elmo, Grover and the rest of the gang to town on March 6-8 for five performances of “Sesame Street Live! Make a New Friend.”

The gang welcomes Chamki, Grover’s friend from India, to Sesame Street. Together, they explore friendship and celebrate cultural similarities, from singing and dancing, to sharing cookies.

Chamki is from far away and she’s visiting for just one day. Grover has a long to-do list for his friend, including kayaking to hot yoga, but Chamki is busy enjoying cookies with Cookie Monster, singing with Abby Cadabby and doing ‘The Elmo Slide.’

“It’s so exuberant and so outgoing,” Joy Carlson, performance director, said. “The whole time you are just amazed by it all. Some of my favorites include the parody of ‘Moves Like Jagger’ and the parody of ‘Hot and Cold.”’

“Make a New Friend” offers a fun-filled, interactive learning experience, including up-close and furry interactions on the audience floor. Like TV’s “Sesame Street,” each “Sesame Street Live!” production features timeless tunes and lessons for all ages.

Carlson, who has toured with the company for about 10 years, calls her job “part dance captain and part stage manager.”

” My job is to make sure the show looks clean and crisp throughout the season,” she said. “For every performance, I sit front of house and call the stage cues.”

“Make a New Friend” has toured since August and this season marks the the 35th touring season for the “Sesame Street Live!” shows, making it the longest running touring show for children.
