Here’s how the area wrestlers fared on Friday, the second day of the PIAA Wrestling Championships
Wyoming Valley Conference
CLASS 2A
Colin Pasone, Meyers (106): In the second round of consolations against Logan Pirl from Ligonier Valley, he won 14-0 to reach the third round of consolations where he faced Fort LeBoeuf’s Abe Guariello losing 4-2, was eliminated and finished one win shy of earning a medal.
Charlie Johnson, Wyoming Area (126): In Friday morning’s quarterfinals, he beat Stone Kepple from Derry Area, 9-3 to reach the state semifinals. In Friday night’s semis, Johnson wrestled Jonathan Gabriel from Bedford and lost 2-1. He then wrestled in the fifth round of consolations and lost 3-2 to Tristan Law from Forest Hills. Johnson will wrestle for fifth today.
Derek Dragon, Lake-Lehman (170): In the quarters, he lost to Beth-Center’s Anthony Welsh, 7-1 to fall into the consolations. In his first consy bout, he wrestled Daniel Brett from Bedford and won with a pin. In his next consolation bout, he lost to Gavin Hoffman from Montoursville, 7-3 and will wrestle for seventh today.
TJ Cistrunk, Meyers (182): Against Corey Hazel from Penns Valley in the quarterfinals, he was pinned in 1:06. In his first loser’s bracket match versus Michael Collins from Pope John Paul II, he lost 3-1 and was eliminated.
Saul Wilkins, GAR (285): Advanced to Friday night’s semifinals with a 2-1 overtime win in the quarters over Tyler Beal from Keystone. In the semis, Wilkins met Burrell’s Al Beattie and was pinned in 2:28. In the fifth round of consolations against Josh Lind of Mount Pleasant, Wilkins won 3-2 and will go for the third-place medal this afternoon.
CLASS 3A
Jimmy Hoffman, Hazleton Area (126): In a loser’s bracket round, match Hoffman defeated James Harkness from Exeter Township, 6-1 before falling in the next round of consolations and being eliminated.
Dan Ritz, Crestwood (138): Lost his quarterfinals bout to Franklin Regional’s Dom Giannangeli, 7-2. Ritz then rebounded to win his next consolation bout to be guaranteed a medal.
Cody Cordes, Wyoming Valley West (160): Cordes defeated Alex Elliott from Sun Valley, 2-1 in the quarters. In today’s semifinals, he will see Noah Stewart from Mifflin County.
Derek Spachman, Hazleton Area (182): In the quarterfinals, he lost to Kellen Stout from Mount Lebanon, 13-0. Spachman was eliminated in his next match when he lost in overtime.
Jake Vaxmonsky, Pittston Area (220): In the second round of consolations, he beat Reading’s Matt Reinhart, 2-0 for his third win of the tournament. His run ended in the third round of consolations when he lost in overtime. He ended the tournament with a 3-2 record.
Ryan Monk, Dallas (285): Against Zach Jablonski from Montour in the quarterfinals, Monk won 5-3 to reach the state semis for the second straight season. He will face Bo Spiller from Solanco in this morning’s semis.
Lackawanna League
CLASS 2A
Thor Balavage, Scranton Prep (220): Facing Seth Hitchens from South Allegheny in the second round of consolations, he won by fall in :45. In the next round of consolations, he faced Wyalusing’s Dylan Otis with a state medal on the line and lost.
CLASS 3A
Stefhen Caple, West Scranton (106): Wrestled Spring Grove’s Dalton Rohrbaugh in the second round of consolations, lost 7-4 and was eliminated.
Chase Gallik, Wallenpaupack (145): In Friday’s quarterfinals, he will defeated Alex Klucker from East Pennsboro, 11-2. In today’s semifinals, he will see Cumberland Valley’s Patrick Duggan.
Kazim Bakhriyev, Scranton (152): Wrestled defending state champion Vincenzo Joseph from Pittsburgh Central Catholic in the quarters and Bakhriyev lost via tech fall. He stayed alive with a win in the consolations to secure a medal.
Niyaz Bakradze, Scranton (170): Taking on Ethan Laird from General McLane in the second round of consolations, he won 11-3, but lost his next match by two points and was eliminated.
Jared Wehrmann, Wallenpaupack (182): Josh Bahr from West Allegheny in the consolations, lost 11-1 and was ousted from the tournament.
Matt Wagner, Delaware Valley (195): Against defending champion Jan Johnson from Governor Mifflin in the quarters, Wagner lost in overtime, 5-1. He came back in his consolation match to win 5-3 and earn a medal.
Northwest/Benton Class 2A
Alan Diltz (106): Won his quarterfinal match, 8-1 over Abe Guariello from Fort LeBoeuf to reach the semifinals. In Friday night’s semis, he faced Chestnut Ridge’s Aaron Burkett and lost 8-2 to fall into the consolation round. Diltz then won his consolation bout, 7-0 and will wrestle for third today.
Mike Stuart (126): In the quarterfinals, he was defeated by Seth Hogue from Reynolds, 3-2. In the third round of consolations, won by pin in overtime to secure a state medal. He then lost his next consolation match and will wrestle for seventh today.
Anthony Vitale (132): In the second consolation round, beat Jason Jones from Saucon Valley, 2-0 to reach the next round of consys where he picked up a one-point victory and earned a state medal. In his next consolation match, he won by fall to advance to the fifth round of consolations, where he lost. He will wrestle for fifth today.
Dominic Vitale (152): Lost to unbeaten Michael Communale from Pius X, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to fall into the loser’s bracket where he won by fall in the third round of consolations and also was guaranteed a state medal. Won a fourth round consolation match, 3-1. Also won a fifth round consolation match and will go for the third-place medal this afternoon.
Logan Womelsdorf (195): In Friday morning’s quarterfinals, Womelsdorf pinned Alek Hummell, from North Schuylkill in 3:11. In the semis against Dylan Reynolds from Saegertown, he lost 7-2. In the consolation round, he won with a takedown at the buzzer and will wrestle for third today.
