HUGHESTOWN — Borough council discussed community improvement matters during Monday’s regular council meeting.

The council is still awaiting the return of bids for the repaving of Rachel street and anticipates major PennDot work on Parsonage and possibly Rock streets in the near future now that winter weather is winding down.

Hughestown mayor Wayne Quick stressed the importance of coordinating street upgrades as underground sewer line repair is also expected on Rock Street.

Quick also asked that borough officials reach out to the Pennsylvania American Water Company regarding the filling of a sizable hole left in Laurel Street following recent underground repairs in that area.

Also on Monday, the borough will prepare its final reviews of a potential ordinance to deal with ongoing problems of residents illegally operating all-terrain vehicles on municipal streets.

The borough will look to give its police officers more latitude in terms of impounding vehicles as citations have not thus far served as a deterrent.

Despite the anticipated increase in ATV traffic, and the identification of the issue as a priority, no ordinance has yet been drafted and thus cannot yet be advertised for public comment. A vote on any new ordinance may therefore be held off until at least May of this year.
