BRADENTON, Fla. — David Ortiz and Pablo Sandoval homered in the third inning off Pirates right-hander Ryan Beckman to erase a deficit and lift the Boston Red Sox over Pittsburgh 5-1 Thursday.

Pirates starter A.J. Burnett pitched 2 1-3 hitless innings but left two runners on base who scored on Ortiz’s three-run drive. Burnett struck out two and walked three.

Angels 10, Cubs 9

TEMPE, Ariz. — Cubs top prospect Kris Bryant homered twice, once with funnyman Will Ferrell in center field for the Angels, and Jorge Soler also connected in Chicago’s loss.

Ferrell replaced Mike Trout, who had three hits, in the outfield for the third inning. Ferrell made a nice play in center, cleanly scooping up Welington Castillo’s single and throwing to the cutoff man near second base.

Mets 11, Nationals 9

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Curtis Granderson and Michael Cuddyer hit solo home runs in the New York Mets’ win.

Nationals starter A.J. Cole allowed one run, four hits and two walks in 1 2-3 innings. Danny Espinosa homered for the Nationals and scored two runs.

Phillies 6, Tigers (ss) 5

LAKELAND, Fla. — Justin Verlander allowed one hit in three scoreless innings for the split-squad Detroit Tigers in a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Verlander hasn’t permitted a run in five innings this spring and has given up only two hits.

Astros 4, Tigers (ss) 3

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — AL batting champion Jose Altuve had three hits and drove in a run, helping the Houston Astros beat a Detroit Tigers’ split squad in 10 innings.

Anthony Gose drove in two runs with a double and triple for the Tigers. Acquired from Toronto in November , he is 11-for-19 (.579) in seven games.

Rays 10, Blue Jays 3

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Tampa Bay opening-day starter Alex Cobb had a tough outing, however the Rays had their best offensive showing of spring training in a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Steve Souza Jr. and Logan Forsythe homered during an eight-run fifth inning for the Rays.

Cardinals 8, Orioles 2

JUPITER, Fla. — Mark Reynolds hit his first home run of the spring as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Baltimore Orioles.

Tony Cruz doubled and singled for St. Louis, making him 5 for 8 in exhibition play.

Rangers 7, White Sox (ss) 3

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Texas lost yet another pitcher to injury, with Anthony Ranaudo walking off the mound during the third inning of the Rangers’ win over a Chicago White Sox squad.

Rangers pitchers Yu Darvish, Derek Holland and Tanner Scheppers have been injured this spring.

Brewers 5, Rockies 3

PHOENIX — Aramis Ramirez got his first extra-base hit of the spring, a two-run double in the first inning that sent the Milwaukee Brewers past the Colorado Rockies.

Athletics 4, Mariners 3

MESA, Ariz. — Scott Kazmir pitched 2 2-3 innings in his first spring start and the Oakland Athletics rallied to beat the Seattle Mariners.

Kazmir gave up two unearned runs and three hits. He walked two and struck out four.

Twins 7, Marlins 6

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Phil Hughes failed to last two innings for the second time in as many spring outings, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Miami Marlins.

Hughes, who issued just 16 walks all last season, has walked one each time out this spring.

Royals 10, Indians 5

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Salvador Perez got three hits and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians.

Paulo Orlando hit a two-run triple off Cleveland reliever Bryan Shaw.

Reds 12, Diamondbacks 4

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Brandon Phillips and Brayan Pena each had three hits and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Phillips doubled twice. Pena broke out of an 0-for-12 start to his spring training with three RBIs.
