SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. — At 12:58 p.m. on March 29, 6,000 brightly-colored eggs were spread out throughout Stroney Field at Hillside Park as approximately 500 children, ages 12 and under, and parents waited for the “green light,” figuratively speaking, to begin a Community Egg Hunt.

The event was sponsored by the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board (AAJRB), KinderCare Learning Center, Morgan Highway in Scranton and the Abington Community Library Teen Leadership Committee.

Once the children received the cue, the kids raced to collect the eggs that contained a variety of prizes ranging from toys, candy, stickers to bubble gum. Young egg hunters who found the five golden eggs also received a KinderCare gift basket with books, Easter novelties, bubbles, a KinderCare lunch bag and water bottle.

Maddy Devine, 13, Blakely, said her favorite part of the event was “getting all the eggs and seeing Luna.” KinderCare brought along its Pre-School and Pre-K class pets, a bunny named Luna and two guinea pigs, Patches and Stripe. Kelsey, the KinderCare Learning Center mascot lion, also greeted children.

“The reason why we have the Egg Hunt is to enrich the community and the lives of the children in the community,” said Leann Ickes, KinderCare Learning Center director. “Any free events we can do for kids in the community are what KinderCare is all about. This is our second year doing it (the community egg hunt) and every year we learn new strategies and ways to improve it…This year we have 6,000 eggs, double from last year.”
