DALLAS — The board of directors and staff of the Back Mountain Memorial Library wish you all a happy spring!
As you celebrate the rebirth of blossoms and the return of warmer weather, why not invite your friends out to eat at Leggio’s Italian Restaurante? The Friends of the Back Mountain Memorial Library will sponsor a library fundraiser from 5 to 8 pm. on Wednesday, April 29. A percentage of the total sales (bar not included) taken in during that time, including eat-in, take out and gift certificates purchased, will be donated to the library to support activities for the Children’s Summer Reading Program. Look for the library display at the front of the restaurant and register to win a Leggio’s gift card as our thanks for your attendance and support.

NEW PROGRAMS:
“Step-by-Step,” a community based Human Service Agency that provides support to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, behavioral health and autism spectrum disorders, will visit the library at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8 in the Children’s Room. All families are welcome to attend and listen to stories and do a craft.
Bryan Kollar – Book signing, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 11. Bryan is a science fiction author and will sign his second book, “The Memory Machine: Birthday Killings.
“Nature Journaling and Creative Writing” will be held from 7 to 9 pm. on Thursdays, April 9, 16, 23 and 30. Join presenter Joseph Stager III and learn how to express your own enjoyment of nature through creative writing and journaling. Joseph holds a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing from Wilkes University and is currently working on completing his MFA. Open to all ages from high school and up. Limited space. Pre-register.
Scrapbook Space: The next session will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 10. This fun group encourages each other to complete those photo projects that may have been hiding in shoeboxes for years. No formal instructions are given, but there is definitely sharing of ideas and (stickers!). The cost is $5 and includes an entire table of crop-space, use of cutters and light snacks. Space is limited. Pre-register by calling the library.
Expressing Your Personality in the Garden” workshop will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 9. Your garden is an expression of yourself and what better way to get “Spring Fever” than to join Luzerne County Master Gardeners Jean Kolojejchick and Roseann Nardone from Penn State Extension and members of the Back Mountain Bloomers Club as they detail how to add plants, structures and accessories to your garden that reflect your distinctive glow.
“Memoir Writing Workshop series” on Saturday, April 18, May 2 and May 30. Presenter Bill Schneider is a graduate of the MFA creative writing program at Wilkes University. Throughout the workshop, you will learn techniques for focusing your life stories and crafting them for future generations.
Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child 2015 selection is Number One Sam, written and illustrated by Greg Pizzoli. Published in 2014 by Disney Hyperion Books, this story is about a competitive race-car driving dog who learns that some things are more important than being number one. This is the 10th year for this valuable program that highlights the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers. In celebration, a special program will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 14 in the Children’s Room of the library. All preschool children are welcome to attend.

Each family will receive a paperback copy of the book, bookmarks, stickers and a family fun and activity guide.
ONGOING CLASSES:
The Fiction Writing Group is open to all ages from high school and up. The group meets from noon to 3 p.m. on alternate Saturdays. All are welcome to come and practice writing and reading their work with facilitator Alyssa Waugh. Contact the library for more information.
Individual I-Pad and Basic Computer instructions – call the library to schedule a one hour session with an instructor to answer your questions with your electronic Tablet or to offer basic computer/internet/e-mail assistance.
SPECIAL TOUR:
The Luzerne County Library System is sponsoring a bus trip to tour the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology led by Stephen R. Phillips, Ph.D. on Saturday, April 25. The museum’s three floors of gallery space feature materials from the ancient Mediterranean World, Egypt, the Near East, Mesopotamia, South and East Asia and Mesoamerica, as well as artifacts from the indigenous peoples of Africa and Native America. This informative and fun trip is open to everyone and will also include a stop at the Reading Terminal Market, which includes 100 merchants that offer a variety of fresh produce, flowers, crafts, books, clothing and specialty items.
