PLAINS — A man found asleep in his vehicle on Wednesday morning woke up to a slew of drug charges and is accused of stealing a motor vehicle.

Police say that Richard Hadvance Jr., 25, last known address in Coal Township, faces three drug possession charges, two charges of misbranding controlled substances and one charge each of receiving stolen property and the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Hadvance was arraigned on the charges before District Judge Rick Cronauer at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, and will have a preliminary hearing before Cronauer at 8:45 a.m. on April 14.

Hadvance’s bail was set to $7,500 monetary, but court records did not indicate whether or not Hadvance had posted it.

According to the affidavit of probable cause:

Hadvance was found sleeping in his vehicle at the Turkey Hill on South Main Street. A police officer had to physically shake the vehicle to get him to wake up. Hadvance allegedly told police that he was “tired” and stopped to sleep, but police said that he appeared to be lethargic and had “constricted” pupils.

While searching Hadvance, police allegedly found an orange prescription pill bottle in his pants pocket, which was not labeled and contained various pills.

A pharmacist later identified the pills as suboxone and ritalin, both of which police say Hadvance did not have prescriptions for.

Police later found a clear plastic bag containing 13 white glassine packets labeled “truth” that contained a chalky white substance. A field test on the substance came back positive for heroin, according to police.

Police later made contact with the registered owner of the white Dodge Avenger that Hadvance had been sleeping in, and it was determined that the vehicle was stolen.

Police also determined that Hadvance had outstanding warrants from Pennsylvania State Probation and Parole, as well as from Luzerne County Adult Probation.
