Residents across Northeastern Pennsylvania should be prepared for thunderstorms and severe weather this afternoon, the National Weather Service is advising.

Luzerne County is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m., the agency says, while some neighboring counties to the north and east, including Lackawanna, are under a tornado watch.

Here is their forecast for the greater Wilkes-Barre area:

• The afternoon brings a chance of showers and thunderstorms, followed by showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 3 p.m.

Some storms could be severe, NWS says, with damaging winds and heavy rain. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

• Tonight, showers and thunderstorms are likely before 2 a.m., NWS says, then a slight chance of showers after 3a.m., followed by patchy fog after 4 a.m.

Much of Northeastern Pennsylvania is facing the possibility of severe weather this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
