WILKES-BARRE — Jackie Flaherty wants a chance to go “DreamJobbing.”
The Hanover Township woman applied for a “dream job” via the DreamJobbing.com website to be a guest photojournalist in Norway for two weeks this summer. This dream job requires a video application to be uploaded on their website and votes to be cast for it.
“The challenge is just that: getting people to vote,” Flaherty, 28, said. “I’m hoping my story of a local girl dreaming big will catch the attention of the valley and encourage some additional support in the form of votes.”
At the end of the voting period — April 22nd — the top 20 vote-getters will be interviewed by Visit Norway, the visitors bureau hiring for the position.
According to the DreamJobbing.com website, the position is for a photojournalist to document scenic Norway.
From the website:
“The winner will travel through some of Norway’s most stunning landscapes for two weeks this summer: through fjords, past cascading waterfalls, valleys and majestic mountains. Along their stunning visual journey, the Dreamjobber will have the opportunity to taste the traditional culinary delight, while staying in some of the most beautiful hotels that capture the modern lifestyle of Norway. From kayaking, hiking, and glacier walking in the famous Fjord Norway Region, to exploring historic museums and medieval fortresses in the Oslo Region – the DreamJobber will have the opportunity to experience all that Norway has to offer, all while documenting the experience through photography and blogs.”
Flaherty, a native of Hanover Township, graduated with a journalism degree in 2009, then worked for the Pittston Sunday Dispatch as an intern-reporter and photographer.
“I’m always craving new adventures and always have a camera with me, even if it’s only on my iPhone,” Flaherty said. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve had an obsession with journaling and taking pictures. It’s gotten obnoxious, really. I’ve had to start training myself to ‘live more in the moment’ because I’m so wrapped in up photographing and writing. I guess I just want to make sure I don’t forget anything and fully remember my experiences authentically.”
Flaherty said applicants must create a profile on the DreamJobbing website and upload a one-minute video to apply. Candidates then activate their social networks in order to drive votes and increase their chances of landing the DreamJob.
Only the top 20 applicants with the most votes get a real interview with the Norway visitors association.
“I’ve been reminding people every day to cast a vote for me,” Flaherty said. “I’ve been posting about it on Facebook, Instagram and calling on my friends and family every day to remind them. Every vote counts.”
The voting period is currently open and will close on April 22nd. Anyone can vote once per day after they create their own profile on the DreamJobbing.com website to deter voter fraud. She said to sign up to vote, enter your email address, name, phone number and birth date. Once the new account is activated by using the temporary password emailed to you, voting once per day just takes a simple click.
“I really want this opportunity because it fits my soul perfectly,” Flaherty said. “I live and breathe outdoor activities and am always seeking a new adventure. With nothing holding me back, it will be amazing to see what I can really do when I push myself.”
