The annual Greater Northeast Pennsylvania Out of the Darkness Community Walk, hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention – Greater Northeast Pennsylvania Chapter, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 in Kirby Park, wilkes-Barre. Check in and registration opens at 11 a.m. This walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs and its goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide 20 percent by the year 2025.
The Greater Northeast Pennsylvania Out of the Darkness Community Walk is one of more than 550 Out of the Darkness Overnight, Community and Campus Walks being held nationwide this year. The walks are expected to unite more than 300,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts. Last year, these walks raised over $21 million for suicide prevention. Last year, this local walk raised $43,136.20 and had 857 participants. Eighty-seven percent of funds raised go directly to fund research and public education about suicide.
To register for the 2018 walk, visit www.afsp.org/NEPA. Participation in the walk is free, but individual walkers and teams are encouraged to raise money in support of AFSP’s suicide prevention initiatives. Walkers who raise $150 by Sept. 16 will receive an Out of the Darkness Walk t-shirt.
