Toomer

WILKES-BARRE —A man shot in the hip while seated in a vehicle late Wednesday night has died.

The Luzerne County Coroner’s Office confirmed Jason Khaleen-Rowe died at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. An autopsy is scheduled on Friday.

City police arrested Delroy Toomer, 25, of Scott Street, Wilkes-Barre, on charges he shot Khaleen-Rowe at South and Meade streets just before 10 p.m.

Police were alerted to the shooting when Khaleen-Rowe was taken to the emergency room at General Hospital.

Police allege Toomer was standing outside the vehicle retrieving two handguns that were under the passenger seat where Khaleen-Rowe was seated. Khaleen-Rowe gave Toomer one handgun, and after he gave Toomer the second handgun, the handgun discharged a round.

Khaleen-Rowe suffered a gunshot wound to his hip as the round exited through his buttocks, according to the criminal complaint.

Toomer was arraigned by District Judge Rick Cronauer on charges of aggravated assault, firearms not to be carried without a license and tampering with evidence. He was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $100,000 bail.

It was not immediately known if Toomer will be charged with criminal homicide.

General Hospital was placed on lock down when Khaleen-Rowe and others with him rushed into the emergency room.

The last time Toomer was before a district judge, he was married — instead, he left in handcuffs.

Ashley Police arrested Toomer minutes after he was married by District Judge Paul Roberts in Kingston on Oct. 18, 2013 on charges he terrorized his child’s mother in earlier that year. Those charges were later dismissed at the preliminary hearing, court records say.
