WILKES-BARRE — One of the area’s top sprinters is off to a strong start.

GAR’s Anthony Maurent took first in the 100 and 200 on Thursday to help the Grenadiers edge Meyers 74-67 in a boys track meet at Wilkes-Barre Memorial. Maurent also helped GAR’s 400 relay squad earn a win.

Raheem Twyman won both hurdles events for the Mohawks.

Coughlin 80, Hazleton Area 70

Muhammad Chesson won three events for the Crusaders, finishing first in the 100, triple jump and long jump.

Wyoming Area 101, Hanover Area 49

Nico Vasquez took first in the 800 and 1,600 while helping the Warriors to one of their three relay wins on the afternoon.

GIRLS TRACK

Hazleton Area 106, Coughlin 43

Kayla Merkle (shot put, discus, javelin) won three events while Mary Everdale (1,600, 3,200) took two for the Cougars.

The Crusaders set two new school records as Madisyn Hawkins won the pole vault (10-0) and Nathaniela Bourdeau won the 200 (25.4).

Wyoming Area 105, Hanover Area 43

Bree Bednarski came through for the Warriors with wins in the 100, 200 and the javelin.

Kaylie Orzechowski topped the Hawkeyes, taking first in the 800 and 1,600.

Meyers 60, GAR 26

The Mohawks won eight of the 11 events that were run to defeat the Grenadiers.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

North Pocono 3, Lake-Lehman 0

The Trojans won by scores of 25-9, 25-5, 25-18.

Pacing Lehman were Charles Hennebaul with five kills and two blocks, Zack Cory with three kills and five digs, and Collin Masters with three digs and six service points.

Wyoming Valley West 3, Tunkhannock 0

Jordan Ellsworth tallied 13 points, 11 kills and seven digs to help the Spartans to the 25-16, 25-17, 25-14 win.

Hunter McGrane (7 kills, 2 blocks) and Tyler Kleinbach (10 points, 3 kills, 2 blocks) added big matches for the Spartans.

For the Tigers, Alex Clark had eight service points, seven digs and nine assists, while Daulton Cavanaugh added five points and four kills, and Shane Streley recorded 13 digs.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Wyoming Seminary 9, Delaware Valley 6

Corrine Conyngham led the Blue Knights with three goals and an assist, while Abigail Straub added two goals.

Gabrielle Grossman, Rachel Harrykoff, Alexis Quick and Madison Sweitzer all had one goal each for Seminary.

Lake-Lehman 19, Pittston Area 3

Katie Strohl and Alysa Adams each had six goals for the Black Knights in the win, while Mallory Wilson and Carey Keiper had two goals each. Emily Galasso, Sydney Lamoreaux and Grace Butler netted a goal apiece for the winners.

For Pittston Area, Rachel Ferrance, Bianca Mattei-Miller and Haley Norwillo accounted for the goals, while Nicole Walters made 20 saves in the goal.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Wilkes 11, Delaware Valley 1

The Colonels pounded out 14 hits and received solid starting pitching from Patrick Condo as they defeated Delaware Valley at home.

Condo notched his second win of the season, going 5.1 innings and allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out eight. Ryan Herbst went 3 for 4 with a run scored. Stephen Ruch finished 2 for 4 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Misericordia sweeps King’s

Misericordia won the opener 8-4 and the nightcap 10-1 against visiting King’s.

D.J. Navoczynski led the Cougars with two hits and three RBI in the first game, while Chris Boroch and Kyle Lindsay added two hits and two RBI each. Steve Cuccio led the Cougars offense in the nightcap with four RBI.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

King’s 12, Eastern 11

Anastasia Araviakis scored twice in overtime, including the game-winning goal with 1:48 left, to give the King’s College women’s lacrosse team a home victory.

FDU-Florham 24, Wilkes 17

Madeleine Brownsey finished with eight goals in Wilkes’ loss at FDU-Florham.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Wilkes splits with Delaware Valley

Wilkes collected a 7-2 win in game one before falling 7-3 in the second game.

Kim Jones earned the win in the circle, going all seven innings and scattering six hits and two runs while striking out nine.

Alex Hoops, Lacey Bixler, Christina Gambino and Ally Paskas all finished with two hits each for Wilkes.

COLLEGE TENNIS

Wilkes sweeps Eastern

The Wilkes men’s and women’s tennis teams scored a pair of 9-0 victories against visiting Eastern.

Both squads took their matches by straight sets, running off the first three doubles matches before taking all six singles flights.
