CLEARWATER, Fla. — Chris Archer prepared for his opening day start, striking out two in two scoreless innings Thursday as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Philadelphia Phillies 10-1.
Archer gave up one hit and walked none, throwing 20 of his 27 pitches for strikes. He’ll start Monday when the Rays host Baltimore.
David DeJesus hit a three-run homer off Phillies starter Jerome Williams.
Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon gave up four runs in the ninth while getting just one out. Papelbon wore catcher Carlos Ruiz’s jersey on the mound — the reason wasn’t immediately known.
Yankees (ss) 6, Pirates 2
TAMPA, Fla. — Alex Rodriguez made several nice plays during his second start at first base, and a New York Yankees’ splits squad beat the Pittsburgh Pirates.
A-Rod nearly turned a double play after fielding Gregory Polanco’s grounder and recording the out at first in the first inning. He made nice scoops in the first and sixth innings on throws by shortstop Stephen Drew.
Rodriguez had a little problem with Starling Marte’s foul pop fly in the third but made the catch, and he cleanly played grounders by Pedro Alvarez and Andrew Lambo one inning later.
Tigers 3, Yankees (ss) 2
LAKELAND, Fla. — With at least two spots open on the Detroit Tigers’ staff, manager Brad Ausmus used nearly all his auditioning pitchers during a win over a New York Yankees’ split squad.
Knowing Justin Verlander (right triceps tightness) and Bruce Rondon (right shoulder tendinitis) will start the season on the disabled list, Ausmus used seven pitchers.
Starter Angel Nesbitt pitched two scoreless innings in his bid to join David Price, Anibal Sanchez, Alfredo Simon and Shane Greene in the initial rotation until Verlander returns.
Yankees starter Bryan Mitchell, who is headed to Triple-A Scranton, allowed three runs and five hits in five innings.
Diamondbacks 10, White Sox 2
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs with a pair of doubles, Tuffy Gosewich had four hits and the Arizona Diamondbacks roughed up Jose Quintana, beating the Chicago White Sox.
Quintana was tagged for six runs and eight hits in two innings.
Chris Owings hit a two-run double as Arizona scored five times in the second. Nick Ahmed had two hits and two RBIs for the Diamondbacks.
Padres 6, Brewers 5
PEORIA, Ariz. — Ryan Braun went 2 for 3, hit his third home run of the spring and declared he’s regained his swing as the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the San Diego Padres.
Braun doubled in the fourth and hit a solo home run off Jason Lane an inning later, leaving him at .361 this spring.
Indians 4, Reds 3
GOODYEAR, Ariz.— Michael Brantley hit his first home run of the spring and the Cleveland Indians beat Cincinnati as the Reds wrapped up camp.
Brantley had two hits, including a two-run homer off Pedro Villarreal in the seventh inning.
Mets 0, Cardinals 0
JUPITER, Fla. — Matt Harvey capped a stellar spring training by striking out four in four innings as the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals played a tie in their Grapefruit League finale.
Harvey allowed three hits and threw 41 of 56 pitches for strikes. He had a 1.19 ERA in six spring training starts, giving up three runs and 17 hits in 22 2-3 innings.
