WEST PITTSTON — Bree Bednarski and Nico Vasquez led the way Thursday when the Wyoming Area track and field teams swept their Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 openers from visiting Hanover Area.

Bednarski won the 100- and 200-meter dashes as well as the javelin while leading the girls to a 105-43 victory.

Vasquez won the 800 and 1600 runs and anchored the 3200 relay in a 101-49 victory.

All four teams in the meet had winning records in the 2014 season. Wyoming Area and Hanover Area finished 2-3 in Division 2 boys behind Northwest.

Jillian Spak and Marcyssa Brown also made big contributions to the girls win. Spak swept both hurdles races. Brown won the triple jump and was part of a win in the 1600 relay.

The boys swept all three relays and won 10 of 11 events that were conducted on the track.

Ethan Crake, Ryan Murphy and Michael Murphy joined Vasquez in leading the victory. Crake won both hurdles races. Ryan Murphy won the 100 and was on two winning relays. Michael Murphy won the 200 and was on the 1600 relay.

Pittston Area’s start of the Division 1 season was delayed for the second time when a meet at Crestwood, which had been scheduled for Tuesday was moved back to April 17.
