It’s been cold to start the spring sports season. But the start couldn’t be much hotter for Wyoming Area softball.

The Warriors, who knocked off Lake-Lehman in the Wyoming Valley Conference opener on Monday, improved to 4-0 on the young season.

Wyoming Area played four games in four days, winning all four. It started with an 8-2 win over Lakeland on March 27. The Warriors followed that up with a 6-2 win over Wyoming Valley West in a scrimmage. Their last two games, however, the Warriors found their stride.

Wyoming Area took down West Scranton, 14-1, and then knocked out Lake-Lehman, 16-2.

An area of concern coming into the Warriors’ season was in the circle. Freshman Gwen Glatz, however, struck out eight batters and allowed three hits and one unearned run. As a team, the Warriors pounded out 17 hits.

The game was the first time Lake-Lehman stepped onto the field this spring.

Glatz provided a triple in Wyoming Area’s four-run first, and a solo home run in the fourth. Through the first four games of the season, Glatz is 8-for-10 from the plate with 11 RBI. She’s cranked two home runs.

“We’ve been hitting really, really well and fielding,” Wyoming Area senior Emily Wolfgang said following the win over the Black Knights. “The freshmen have been playing a big role and have fit into the team nicely.”

Wolfgang is 6-for-10 with six RBI in the young season. She was 3-for-4 with four RBI in the win over Lake-Lehman.

Glatz’s earned run average sits at 1.00 through the first four games. She’s pitched three complete games.

After hosting a scrimmage on Saturday against North Pocono, Wyoming Area travels to Tunkhannock on Monday for some WVC action. The Warriors will host Dallas on Tuesday.

Patriots still waiting

While Wyoming Area has played four games so far this season, Pittston Area has yet to have a full practice outside.

According to coach Vito Quaglia, the team has used the junior high field a few times, but haven’t stayed out for more than an hour. Thursday was the first time the team came close to a full practice outside.

The Patriots are chomping at the bit, Quaglia said. They’ll get their chance early this week. Pittston Area will host Hazleton Area on Monday, April 6 at the Primary Center in Hughestown. On Tuesday, the team hosts Wyoming Valley West.

Pittston Area was scheduled to scrimmage Delaware Valley on Saturday, April 4.

“Everyone is keeping positive,” Quaglia said. “For the limited time we’ve had outside the girls are ready to go.”
