EXETER — The Borough Council discussed environmental issues during Tuesday night’s regular council meeting.

Councilman Larry Dellegrotto advised residents to be on the lookout for a zoning hearing to be scheduled regarding the testing of an area for the possible extraction of coal.

Silverbrook Anthracite of Laflin is interested in a plot of land off of Slocum Avenue in the vicinity of Keystone Automotive. The area identified for testing is less than an acre in total, but is currently listed as a conservation zone. Silverbook Anthracite would therefore need to apply for a use variance.

The company has already received clearance from the state’s Department of Environmental Protection, but has yet to officially apply to the borough for the variance.

In other environmental news, the borough will delay its vote on a possible change to single-stream recycling until its June regular meeting. Councilman John Morgan, who had loudly voiced his support for the change during the March meeting, was absent from Tuesday’s meeting due to his mourning the loss of a family member.

Dellegrotto listed Morgan’s unfortunate absence in addition to some possible complications in May as the reasons for the delay but promised that a detailed report on the matter would be delivered in June.

Also on Tuesday, municipal officials promised to have litter on Packer Avenue cleaned up.

The issue has become a regular nuisance within the borough. Past discussions on preventative measures included the possibility of camera installation, but no feasible resolution has yet been identified.

The Borough Council will meet next at 7 p.m. on May 4.
