Upon reading the article “Book penned in prison,” regarding a how-to guide for navigating through federal prison authored by convicted embezzler Lisa Barrett, I wondered how angered some of the Times Leader’s readers must have felt.
After all, the audacity of a convicted felon trying to make money from her crime. Well, I wasn’t one of them. As a matter of fact, I applaud her.
For as long as I can remember, our political leaders have been telling us that America is the land of opportunity. Anyone has an equal chance at success.
Evidently, the entrepreneurial axiom is true as demonstrated by Ms. Barrett. In this same context, just take a look at the reality TV genre. Where but in America can you get paid very well for conducting yourself like a complete idiot in front of a TV audience? I’m thinking of such shows as “The Real Housewives” series, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” “Jersey Shore” and others.
When I raise this issue with some of my associates, they just say, “You don’t have to watch them.”
The same logic should apply to anyone upset with Ms. Barrett: You don’t have to buy the book.
