I am a longtime resident of Jenkins Township and a candidate running for township supervisor.

I am writing to express my concerns about culm banks, poor road conditions (patching deplorable township roads is like putting on a Band-Aid, it’s spending good money on a bad fix), denial of claims for damage done by township employees, a house sitting on an island since the 2011 flood, closing of township roads that block access to emergency exits, no winter maintenance to access a remaining remote emergency exit road, empty homes on River Road and raising taxes when there is a budget surplus.

There are many other issues, but my main concern is raising taxes when there is a budget surplus. I will definitely not vote to raise taxes on residents, as two of my opponents have done twice, when a budget surplus exists, nor will I vote to give massive tax breaks without assurance of lasting benefit to the township.

It’s obvious Jenkins Township needs federal and state aid. Removing culm banks along Market Street would be a great idea resulting in land available for development of homes and businesses, especially industrial jobs, to bring up the tax base.

There are so many issues to work on this coming January. Grants are out there; all we have to do is prioritize and apply.
