Eddie Lukowski had 31 assists and Brett Piontkowski made 15 kills Monday as Nanticoke Area swept Coughlin, 3-0, in a high school volleyball match at Nanticoke Area.

Matt Winters added 13 kills and six digs as the Trojans claimed their three games by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-12.

Robert Zagurski had 20 kills for Coughlin, Sal Purpura had 20 assists and Jillian Hoyt made five digs despite the loss.

Delaware Valley 3, Hanover Area 0

Andrew Sorton posted 21 kills and four aces as the Warriors earned a 25-22, 25-12, 25-19 sweep on the road. Jeremiah Krauss added 25 assists and 10 digs while Colin Naturale had 17 digs and 22 service points.

Derek Brodginski (3 kills, 9 digs, 2 blocks), Dylan Luzny (7 digs, 7 assists, 7 service points) and John Murphy (3 kills, 7 digs, 4 assists) led the Hawkeyes.

BASEBALL

Wilkes 23, Bible Baptist 4

The Wilkes University baseball team exploded for 23 runs in a 23-4 rout of visiting Baptist Bible College Monday afternoon at Artillery Park.

Wilkes improves to 14-11 overall following the non-league victory.

After Baptist Bible scored one run in the top of the first, Wilkes tied the game in the bottom of the frame when James Brown singled to right field scoring Jarret Clymer.

A ten-run seventh inning for Wilkes capped by an Alex Kramer three-run homer gave the Colonels a 23-2 lead with two innings left to play.

King’s 14, Eastern University 11

The King’s College baseball team used a five-run seventh inning to defeat Eastern University at Lipo Field.

With the win King’s improves to 5-15 overall and 1-9 in Freedom play while Eastern falls to 8-14 overall and 5-7 in league competition.

The Monarchs batted around in the seventh inning turning a 9-8 deficit into a 13-9 lead.

Joe Civello had two hits and five RBIs for the Monarchs while Joe Zito had three hits and three RBIs. Bruce Breithaupt and Justin Martinelli also had two hits in the game. On the mound Justin Binkowski got the win in relief while Joe Zito got the save.

GOLF

King’s golfers finish 9th at Invy

The King’s College was unable to match its opening day performance at the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational Tournament. The Monarchs carded a 330 on the second day of the event to finish 9th in the 12 team field Monday at Glenmaura National Golf Course.

The Monarchs, who shot a 313 on Sunday, finished with a 643.

King’s Ryan Tracy placed 10th among 60 golfers in the tournament with a 153 in the two-day event. Ryan Georgetti tied for 27th with a 161 while Shamus Gartley was tied for 34th at 163. Corey Palma checked in at 41st with a 166 while Bill Dombrowski was 50th with a 177.

Nicholas Johnson of Marywood captured medalist honors with a four-over par 146 while Pacer teammate Michael Thomas was second at 147. Mason Woolford of McDaniel finished third with a 149.

MEN’S TENNIS

Wilkes’ Wilson player of week

Wilkes University senior men’s tennis standout Steven Wilson was named Freedom Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday.

Wilson went 3-1 in singles play from the No. 1 and 2 positions including three straight set wins against FDU-Florham, Misericordia and Rutgers-Camden. He teamed with Adam Lefkandinos and Brendon Blachowski to go 2-1 in doubles play from the No. 1 and 2 spots in the Colonel lineup.

Misericordia athletes honored

Four Misericordia University student-athletes earned Freedom Conference Player of the Week honors, following solid performances last week.

Ryan Dorosh (baseball) and Alissa Steier (softball) were both named Pitcher of the Week while Katie McLoughlin (women’s lacrosse) was named Goalie of the Week and Amy Viti was named MAC Track Athlete of the Week.

Dorosh set a new school record with his 20th career win, tossing a two-hit complete game while striking out seven in Misericordia’s 6-1 victory over Delaware Valley.

Steier went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA while striking out 18 over 21 innings. Steier tossed all nine innings in a win at Scranton then picked up a victory in the second game of doubleheader at Delaware Valley. Steier closed the week with a complete game, four-hit shutout against FDU-Florham in the Cougars’ home opener at Anderson Field.

McLoughlin finished the week 2-0, allowing just eight goals in 90 minutes. She posted 11 saves in MU’s victory at Eastern on Wednesday afternoon.

Viti won the 200m, 400m and was part of the winning 1600 relay team. Viti’s success helped the Cougars to the top score in the event.

RUGBY

Breakders 27, Lock Haven 26

Ryan Gadjowski’s successful penalty kick as time expired propelled the Wilkes Barre Rugby Club to a 27-26 win over the Lock Haven RFC on Saturday.

John Van, J.B. Sly and Gadjowski all found the try zone in the win while Steve Turner, Ty Freas, and Nate Myers anchored the Breaker defense. The Breakers continue Spring action Saturday when they host the Hibernian RFC at 1 p.m. at Kirby Park.
