DALLAS — Tuesday’s softball game looked like many Crestwood has played in the recent past.
Pitching — solid. Defense — solid. Offense — struggling.
The Comets, though, managed to score the game’s only run, needing an extra inning to do so in their 1-0 victory over Dallas in a Wyoming Valley Conference softball game at the Black Mountain Little League.
Sophomore Jordan Olenginski delivered the game-winning hit in the top of the eight, a two-out liner to left field that scored Sarah Macko. Macko had singled with one out and stole second on a strike-three second out.
“I felt like I hit the center of the ball when I hit it,” Olenginski said. “I was pumped.”
Crestwood (2-2 Div. 1) was shut out five times during the WVC season last year. The Comets scored two or fewer runs four other times. They weren’t lighting up the scoreboard this year either, with six runs through their first three games.
On Monday, Crestwood trailed Division 1 defending champion Hazleton Area 1-0 through six innings only to fall 4-0.
“I tell our girls that defensively were right there,” Crestwood coach Bob Bertoni said. “I don’t care what anybody says, we have one of the best pitchers (Colleen Borum) in the league. And our defense is phenomenal. But we just don’t score runs. We spend so much time working on offense.
“If we could just fix our offensive end, we could be one of the better teams in the conference.”
Dallas (1-2 Div. 2) might need to tinker with its hitting as well. After a seven-run seventh in a 16-9 victory over Lake-Lehman last week, the Mountaineers have scored one run in their last 15 innings.
“We played well,” Dallas coach Joyce Tinner said. “We just didn’t capitalize when we had the opportunities on the bases. We’re a young team and when we start playing together like we did today we’re going to surprise some teams.”
Dallas left six runners stranded in scoring position through the first six innings. The Mountaineers left the bases loaded in the sixth and a runner on third in the seventh.
Dallas also hit into some bad luck in the fifth. With Maddie Kelley on second and two outs, Kylee Saba ripped a line drive as hard as possible. It went right back to Borum in the circle for the final out.
Crestwood didn’t get its first hit until the fifth inning when Mady Heller doubled to left-center with two outs. The Comets had just two baserunners prior to that.
“It’s hard because we have a lot of younger girls but they’re doing a lot,” said Borum, a senior in a starting lineup that has four freshmen. “Sarah Macko at shortstop is doing a great job for us there. And Sydney (Sobolewski) catching is doing an amazing job. They’ve really stepped up and helped us.”

Celine Podlesney tossed a two-hit shutout as the Cougars won on the road in five innings. Mikaela Browdy led Hazleton Area at the plate, finishing with three hits, three RBI and a triple. Lexi Wolk also tripled.
Cassie Konopki doubled for the Black Knights.

Gwen Glatz struck out nine and scattered six singles in a complete-game victory. Emily Wolfgang led the Warriors at the plate, going 3 for 3.
Victoria Martin gave the Crusaders an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single.
Tunkhannock 2, Pittston Area 1
The Tigers doubled up the Patriots, 2-1, at home on Tuesday night. Danielle Krispin tallied a run and drove another home as Sydney Faux gave up only one run in seven innings pitched.
Postponement
Wyoming Valley West at Nanticoke was postponed Tuesday due to field condition. The teams will make up the game at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25.
