Founder of Pittston Little League dies
Wilbert William Leppert of North Main Street, Pittston, died Thursday
morning at the Hospice St. John in-patient unit at Wilkes-Barre General
HospitalBorn and reared in Hughestown, he was a son of the late Fred and
Florence Blessing Leppert.
He lived in Pittston most of his life and was a graduate of Hughestown High
School.
Prior to retirement, he was employed as a sergeant on the Pittston police
department.
He founded of the Pittston Little League in 1951. He helped turn a site of
a former dump and mining area into a field for boys. He contacted about 200
sports-minded Pittston residents and asked them to get involved. At the first
meeting only six people attended but through his determination 22 people had
showed up by the third meeting. He also helped raise money by contacting local
business people and interested individuals. He served as the league’s
president for 35 years and eventually the field was named in his honor.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, Pittston.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police in Luzerne County and the
Constables Association of Luzerne County.
He was a member of the Luzerne County Chapter of Sports Hall of Fame and
inducted as an athlete in 1989.
He also was active in many community activities.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Yolanda Baccarro, and
brother, Howard Leppert.
Surviving are son, Rodger cq Leppert, Falls; daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Linda)
Scaz, with whom he resided; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister,
Mayor Gladys Wilson, Wyoming; brother, Morlyn Leppert, Hughestown.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Adonizio Funeral
Home Inc., 251 William St., Pittston,
