Wilkes-Barre CYC swimmers go 1-1
The Wilkes-Barre CYC boys swimming team split a pair of meets recently. The
Sealions defeated the Tunkhannock Tiger Sharks 144-92, and lost to the
Scranton YMCA 118-114In the victory against Tunkhannock, the 10-and-under
Sealions swept all the races. Mike Greenfield, Greg Greenfield, C.J. Soprano
and Dominic Castrignano captured the 200 medley relay. Pat Wallace won the 100
individual medley and 50 breaststroke and helped the team capture second in
the 200 freestyle relay. Brandin Shaffern, Chris Austin and Patrick Conlin
also swam in the 200 freestyle relay.
Gerry McGroarty won the 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke and swam on the
winning 200 freestyle relay. Vince Ginnochetti, Tom Waskevich and Ryan Murray
also swam in the 200 freestyle relay, and Murray also posted a victory in the
50 butterfly.
The 100 medley relay team of Mike Panzitta, John Dougherty, Tyler Steele
and James Murphy placed first. Mike Austin, Gary Zurawski, Derek Spaide and
Gary Buczynski finished second. Murphy won the 25 freestyle, and Dougherty won
the 50 freestyle. They teamed with Buczynski and Panzitta to win the 100
freestyle relay.
Other first-place winners were: Pat Son, 50 freestyle; Tip Wright, 100
butterfly; Justin Shaffern, 100 backstroke; Chris Milz, 50 freestyle; and
Michael Son, 200 freestyle.
Against Scranton, McGroarty won the 100 IM and 50 backstroke. Murphy won
the 25 freestyle, and swam with Buczynski, Steele and Panzitta on the winning
100 freestyle relay team. Ginnochetti posted victories in the 50 freestyle, 50
butterfly and 200 freestyle relay. Pat Son, Donnie Murray and Waskevich were
the other members of the team.
The Sealions will face Carbondale in two weeks.
Basketball
Kimber Rava scored eight points as Coughlin defeated Meyers 38-14 in the .
Calie McCormick and Kayla Richelmi scored four points each for Meyers.
Chelsey Ostrowski scored 13 points as Carr’s Gators defeated Wyoming
Seminary, 42-19. Amy Pryor led Seminary with nine.
Kristen Boone and Tessa Weigand scored six points each as the Comets topped
the Mohawks, 20-15. Veronica Ngolo led the Mohawks with eight.
Tonya McAnally scored 10 points as Crestwood defeated GAR, 20-13. Adonna
Danowski scored seven to pace GAR.
Hollie Suda and Jennifer Ebert had five apiece as the Grenadiers defeated
Plains 18-15. Megan Ford scored 10 for Plains.
Alicia Marinelli, Marissa Patterson and Tara Bolton netted eight each as
Coughlin defeated Plains, 52-21. Hollie Major and Amy Filipiak had seven each
for Plains.

Wyoming Area remained undefeated in Division II of the with a 42-29 victory
over Freeland.
Brian Wolcott paced the Warriors with 10 points. The Warriors also defeated
Bishop Hafey, 59-32. Steve Selenski scored 15 points, and Joe Falzone and Eric
Randazzo added 14 each.
Dallas beat West Hazleton 44-39 and Lake-Lehman 40-31. Paul Dougal scored
18 and Danny Fetko added 13 in the victory over West Hazleton. Joe Holdeman
scored 10 for West Hazleton. Dougal had 16 points in the Lehman victory. B.J.
Lewis and Josh Schraeder had nine each for Lehman.
Hanover defeated Wyoming Seminary 56-27 as Mike Zapatoski scored 21. Bob
Potorski led Seminary with eight. Zapatoski scored 26 and Ryan Milford added
18 as Hanover topped Bishop Hafey 69-38.
In Division I play, Wyoming Valley West stayed unbeaten with a 52-41
victory over Crestwood. Greg Pieczynski scored 12 and Charlie Desiderio and
Paul Piskorik added 10 each for the Spartans. Joe Dorzinsky led Crestwood with
12.
Lewis scored 10 as Lehman defeated Freeland, 32-27. William Schott added
11.
Jim Pfromm paced Berwick to a 44-25 victory over Tunkhannock.

Wet Paint defeated Man, Levi & Nogi Insurance 74-66 as David Feder scored

In the , Chili’s defeated Dr. Martin Fried 24-16 in preseason action. Benjy
Pezzner scored seven points for Chili’s, and Eli Fried scored six for Dr.

Dr. Brown Eye Care defeated Dr. David Greenwald 34-24. Scott Kaufer scored
13 for Dr. Brown. Hal Schwartz had 14 for Dr. Greenwald.

Flaherty’s defeated Caribou 3-0 in the .
Galland, Steinhauer & Repa shut out Heck’s/Jamie’s 3-0. The Straight Aces
beat Who Cares 3-0.

In the premier of the at the Jewish Community Center, the Red Raishes
defeated the Golden Gummels 4-2. Max Lubin and Henry Messinger had three hits
each for the Raishes. Jon Fendler homered and Neil Brown and Josh Berger had
two hits each for the Gummels.
The Raishes defeated the Gummels again, 4-2. D.J. Berley, Messinger, Zach
Kranson and Derek Lefkowitz all had two hits for the Raishes. Scott Nachlis
had two hits for the Gummels.
In Whiffle Ball action, the Kelly Green Kuffs defeated the Birch Bets 5-4.
Shane Walsh, Dan Engel and Jordan Krawitz homered for the Kuffs. Zach Roth had
three hits for the Bets.
The Kuffs also topped the Bets 8-6. Engel and Krawitz homered. Jeff Robzen
and Ryan Savitz homered for the Bets.
