Students from the Junior Leadership Hazleton Class of 2025-26 planned and carried out a Community Service Project at Heritage Hill in Weatherly on Dec. 4. Heritage Hill provides a home-like environment for older adults requiring some level of personal care.
The JLH project team held several lively rounds of Jeopardy, with the Heritage Hill residents coming up with many correct answers. Students also led sing-alongs and provided snacks of sweets and healthy treats along with hot chocolate. The morning closed with gifts for all.
Project team members included Nashla Alvarado Grullon from Hazleton Area Career Center; Taryn Leonard from Hazleton Area Arts & Humanities Academy; Abigail Bachman, Eugene Hradil, Eva Pasca, and Jaelys Rivas-Mateo from Hazleton Area Academy of Sciences; Elyse Barletta from Marian Catholic High School, Christina Chrin from MMI Preparatory School; and Ben Kropp from Weatherly Area High School.
In addition to helping teens learn about community needs, opportunities, problems, and resources by attending monthly sessions, Junior Leadership Hazleton requires these young people to be a member of one of three community service project teams. This helps them to learn planning and leadership skills, as well as team spirit — all of which are tools for their own lives and through which they can contribute to others in the future.
Junior Leadership Hazleton is dedicated to Dr. L. Edgar Dessen, founder of CAN DO. It is a program administered by Leadership Hazleton, an affiliate of the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce. Funding for the program is provided, in part, by the CAN DO Community Foundation.
